Historical concepts of the athlete's heart

Article Abstract:

The D. Bruce Historical lecture on the topic of the history of the Athlete's heart is presented because it is a history of cardiovascular medicine in general and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) in particular. The author has traced the history of the Athlete's heart through the early 19th and the 20th century, which mirrors the ongoing debate on the risks, and rewards of vigorous athletic training and competition, existent since ancient Greece.

Physical fitness and activity as separate heart disease risk factors: a meta-analysis

Article Abstract:

This article examines the relationship between physical activity level, cardiorespiratory fitness, and heart disease risk. A meta-analysis of epidemiological data indicates that cardiorespiratory fitness is a more significant indicator of risk for heart disease than physical activity level.

The levels of nonoccupational leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) by degree of urbanization and geographic region of the United States are estimated. The prevalence of physical inactivity varies by degree of urbanization and geographic region of the United States.
