Terry Hutchinson finished first in the J/24 Midwinter Championship held in Miami, FL, in Jan 1996. Wind conditions constantly changed during the three-day regatta, and Hutchinson remarked that it was one of his most difficult races.

The 1996 Laser Midwinters East attracted almost 200 boats and served as the first of three qualifying races for the Laser Class US Olympic trials. The top 15 finishers received berths in the trials. Race results are included.
