Marine communications 2005: Ham it up

Article Abstract:

Single-sideband (SSB), a transmitting and receiving mode shared by military, ham, and marine radio operators on the high-frequency (HF) band located between 3 and 30 MHz is also called shortwave as the wavelength of its signals ranges between 10 and 300 meters. Marine single-sideband equipment usually comes with an automatic antenna turner that is mounted aft and has a direct contact to seawater for the required grounding.

Leisure vs. pleasure

People and their declining interest in marine activities are discussed. A decade ago family sailing was prevalent, but the scenario has changed, and number of leisure activities has increased but the time available to enjoy them has decreased.
