Throwing the mountains into the lakes: on the perils of nomothetic conceptions of the exercise-affect relationship

Article Abstract:

This article investigates the belief that moderate exercise causes positive changes in mood and affect. A psychological assessment of affect before and after a session of moderately intense cycling revealed that approximately half of the participants experienced an improvement in affect while the others experienced affect deterioration.

Some like it vigorous: Measuring individual differences in the preference for and tolerance of exercise intensity

Article Abstract:

Studies were conducted to develop a self-report measure of individual differences in the preference for and tolerance of exercise intensity. The report results helped to tailor exercise prescriptions as per characteristics of each individual within the range of intensity that is both effective and safe, thus reducing dropout from exercise and improving health.

Measuring state anxiety in the context of acute exercise using the State Anxiety Inventory: an attempt to resolve the brouhaha

Article Abstract:

Studies show that the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (SAI) is an inadequate method for assessing state anxiety in the acute exercise context. Reasons include SAI's failure to distinguish anxiety-antecedent appraisals from exercise-induced increases in activation.
