Authenticity in crisis: Shur and new Israeli forms of ethnicity

Article Abstract:

The Israeli film Shur raised many questions concerning its simultaneous claims for authenticity as documentary as well as its metaphorical depictions of modern life of African-Israelis. The film, directed by Shmuel Hasfari, depicted a family of Moroccan Jews, whose children attempt to assimilate into modern society at the same time their parents practice ancient rituals of magic and religious prayer. Israeli viewers questioned how accurate the film depicted the experience of emigrant Jews, and argued over the representation of one the daughters, Rachel, whose apparent worldly success is shadowed by her inability to communicate with others.
