On university excellence: reflections from Berkeley

Article Abstract:

The University of California at Berkeley is under mounting pressure to institute reforms in its faculty hiring and student admissions policies to reflect contemporary racial and gender issues. Aware that the qualities required for academic excellence are independent of race or gender, the university has approached demands for liberalization with caution so as not to lower academic standards. Nevertheless, the university has instituted reforms in some other areas such as curriculum changes. For instance, a student must now pass at least one course that deals with three major ethnic cultures in California.

Blithe spirit

Article Abstract:

Many brandies available in the UK are of a high standard, according to a survey of 23 different brandies. The best brandies offer interesting aromas such as fruit and spice and blend wood and fruit. However, cheaper, French brandies made outside Cognac and Armagnac tend to be of low quality. The best brandy was judged to be Safeway VSOP Cognac Reserve, followed by Leopold Carrere Armagnac Millesime 1981.
