Performance paradox: gaining speed requires slowing down, whether you're racing or not

The specifics of a running training regimen can have a powerful impact on aerobic enzymes, lactate threshold and stored glycogen in the body. A Univ of Alberta, Canada, study tested endurance athletes. Four groups were tested to study the effects of tapering.

Sports injuries for runners can be reduced by running fewer consecutive days. A recent study suggests running four days per week instead of six. Cross-training can be done on days off.
