To get ahead, go backward; retro running strengthens, stretches and provides a great workout

Article Abstract:

Retro running, or running backward, increases the heart rate, increases oxygen intake, strengthens quadriceps and stretches the calf muscles. The only drawback is greater stress on the Achilles tendon. It also decreases knee impact forces for sore-kneed runners.

Male athletes carry 11% more oxygen in their blood than females, due to a higher amount of oxygen-carrying hemoglobin. A lower body fat average also allows male athletes to perform better than women athletes.
