Communications and navigation equipment are considered essential components of boating. However, boaters should learn how to use these equipment to maximize their potentials. VHF, GPS and EPRIB systems are viable options for ensuring boat safety and facilitating rescue operations.

Advances in satellite and communications technology have allowed boaters to stay in touch with civilization from almost anywhere in the world. These include Inmarsat's Mini-M satellite service which provides voice, data and fax and Magellan System Corp's World Phone.
