Born in Boston on February 26, 1932 to writer Warwick Tompkins and his wife, Gwen, Warwick Tompkins Jr. acquired his distinctive sobriquet along with his birthright. Tompkins was certified a 'Shellback' by Father Neptune and as a veteran of six Atlantic passages was given the nickname Commodore.
