Scientific bases for precompetition tapering strategies

Article Abstract:

Research points out that a taper considering a progressive nonlinear reduction of the exercise training load over a period of time has to minimize fatigue without compromizing adaptations by maintaining training intensity, training volume reduction by 60-90%, and frequency reduction by not more than 20%. Data indicate that duration of the taper is between 4 and more than 28 days.

Musculoskeletal response to exercise is greatest in women with low initial values

Article Abstract:

Research demonstrates that in women greatest improvements in hip bone mineral density, hip abductor strength, leg power, and postural stability occur with exercise beginning at the lowest initial value of a physiologic variable. Results indicate that such a progrm may reduce the risk of fractures in premenopausal women.
