A 1913 Harley-Davidson Model 9B, owned by postman Fermin Shaw, was restored in connection with the 95th anniversary of the company. It was nicknamed 'Silent Gray Fellow' with unique features such as the chain drive and a dry clutch. It has a '5-35' engine with a pocket-type mechanical intake valve.

Outboard Motor Corp's new motor is in response to pressure to redesign traditional outboards because of the massive amounts of pollution they cause. OMC's new fuel injector system greatly reduces emissions from the outboard. The Ficht injector system is superior to other such systems.

The EPA, beginning with 1998, will initiate a nine-year phase-in period for decreasing the hydrocarbon emissions from outboard motors by 80%. Although many manufacturers have complained, others have begun to improve emissions with the 1997 models. Specific motors are discussed.
