Space invaders at Wimbledon: Televised sport and deterritorialization

Article Abstract:

The televising of the 2005 Wimbledon Tennis Championships in the United Kingdom and United States is analyzed to explore how the space of Wimbledon is communicated to different national cultures. A discourse analysis of newspaper reports and television broadcasts demonstrates ways in which the mediation of Wimbledon can be understood as subject to deterritorialization.

Game, sex, and match: The construction of gender in British newspaper coverage of the 2000 Wimbledon Championships

Article Abstract:

A comparison is made on British newspaper coverage of female and male tennis players competing in the 2000 Wimbledon Championships. Qualitative comparisons revealed that the predominantly male journalists generally devalued the athletic achievements of female tennis players by using cultural and racial stereotypes, trivialization, and sexual innuendo.

Selling the game short: an examination of the role of antiracism in British football

Article Abstract:

Anti-discrimination policies in rugby, or British football, are explored. It is posited that these policies would be more effective if they addressed the broad range of racisms within the sport, rather than targeting specific areas such as hooliganism.
