The Social Physique Anxiety Scale: reliability and construct validity

Article Abstract:

A study of college students showed the Social Physique Anxiety Scale (SPAS) produced largely reliable results. The SPAS model was equally valid when measuring anxiety levels about body size and shape for men and women, although results suggested women were more conscious of their physique than men. This factor may be due to messages from mass media. Findings from this study support earlier work in this area.

Factorial validity and invariance testing of the Swedish social physique anxiety scale: Arguments for gender-specific scales

Article Abstract:

The factorial validity and factorial invariance is examined across gender of the 9-item and two 7-item previously supported unidimensional factor models of the Social Physique Anxiety Scale in two samples of Swedish male and female university students. Results demonstrated that the Motl and Conroy (2000) 7-item model made the closest fit to data in both the male and female gender.

The social physique anxiety scale: men, women, and the effects of modifying item 2

Article Abstract:

The tool for measuring social physique anxiety (SPAS) has been questioned by those who claim Item 2 regularly performs poorly in analyses of scale properties. This study investigates and evaluates the Item 2 and the SPAS for invariance across gender.
