THE TOP TEN Medical Advances of 1998

Article Abstract:

Nutritionists have discovered evidence that vitamin intake above recommended dietary allowances may help to prevent problems such as cancer and heart disease. Increased B vitamin and calcium intake have proved to be particularly effective. The Institute of Medicine is attempting to set new daily allowances reflecting this knowledge. Other notable medical events of 1998 are presented.

One medical advance in 1996 was the announcement that protease inhibitors may help AIDS patients live 20 to 30 years or more. Advances in hearing aids, bypass surgery and the treatment of ulcers, osteoporosis, prostate cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and menopause are discussed.
