Taking the plunge: fall overboard and hungry sharks are the least of your problems

Article Abstract:

An individual narrated his experience when he fell overboard while on a fishing trip. It took the ship's crew 15 minutes to search and rescue the individual. Sailors should take precautions when sailing to avoid falling overboard which leads to life threatening consequences.

Overboard at night

Article Abstract:

A successful nighttime rescue of a man overboard involves keeping lights trained on the person and stopping the boat quickly. Practice drills are essential. A rescue performed during the 1992 Newport-Bermuda Race is described.

Double trouble

A competitor in the 1994 Chicago-Mackinac Race describes the experience of rescuing two men who had been washed overboard from another sailboat in the race. Safety lessons learned from the rescue are discussed.
