Tech Notes: Homing in

Article Abstract:

The results of the independent tests of Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRBs) and Personal Locator Beacon (PLBs) conducted by the Equipped to Survive Foundation (ETS) contained 17 conclusions about gear and system effectiveness and made 23 recommendations for improvements. One of the issues that came up in the tests was that submerging the base of a typical PLB's ribbon antenna weakened both the 406- and 121.5-Mhz signals.
