The Cleveland "Indians": a case study in American Indian cultural dispossession

Article Abstract:

This article examines the exploitation of Native Americans by sports teams. The authors argues European American notions of property rights seek to dispossess Native Americans by exploiting ideas of "Indianess" by sports teams, such as the Cleveland Indians baseball team, and asserts the images suggest a "possessive investment in whiteness" which reinforces a racial hierarchy.

The 'sudden death' of hockey in Hartford: sports fans and franchise relocation

Using the Hartford Whalers hockey team as a case study, this article examines the relationship between sports teams and their fans. The psychological affect of a team's relocation on their fans, and how the team's loss is often described in death metaphors is examined.
