The press conference as a performance: Representing Haile Gebrselassie

Article Abstract:

A press conference staged on behalf of the Ethiopian long-distance runner and humanitarian Haile Gebreselassie is reviewed to examine the complex workings of whiteness in a transnational context. The staging of this press conference works to obscure the inequitable interrelations between Europe and Africa, suggesting that Ethiopia's social problems, including poverty, famine, and disease, are concerns for Africans only.
