Tristan Jones unveiled

Article Abstract:

Tristan Jones was probably the most successful sailing writer of the twentieth century. Most of his fans suspected he stretched the truth a bit in his tales, but a new biography by Anthony Dalton, reveals that in fact truth had little bearing in his writing because he firmly believed that for him the way to success as an author was in writing tales of adventure based on his experiences rather than his actual experiences.

All well and good - however most of tristan's book were officially classified by his publishers as non-fiction. Indeed if you search out the collection in the Washington State Library they are classified as such. Tristan therefore deliberately lied in an effort to make his sailing sound more exciting than it actually was and as a means of securing his only real income. People who began reading his books were of the belief that they were true accounts of his life. He duped his readers and the world - in a word he was a con man
