Utah's last stand: the battle for a great, unspoiled wilderness is under way

Article Abstract:

The Republican congressional sweep has hurt environmental legislation, and public lands in Utah are a good example. A 1989 proposal to designate 5.7 million Utah acres as wilderness was moving along fine until Republicans took office. Readers are urged to become environmentalists.

Practicing the voyageur art: there was a time long ago, when big canoes traveled a big lake

In pioneer days Lake Superior was a major trading route for canoes laden with up to 2 1/2 tons of cargo, but in modern times the Lake is used more by sports enthusiasts. One man describes a week-long trip he took from Grand Portage, MN, to Thunder Bay, Ontario.
