Boat news in western US are headlined by the revision of CA bill, putting age limit rather than education as a mandate for recreational boaters and the closure of two inner channels in New Port Bay, CA because of unsafe water. The Santa Barbara-based schooner Spike Africa is also being marketed as venue for any ocean-going event.

Several developments concerning boats and boating in the Western States as of Apr 1998 are presented. California Gov Pete Wilson included nearly $60 million for the Dept of Boating and Waterways in the 1998 budget. Moreover, Mexican authorities threatened to scrap the 'SS Catalina.'

ESPN will use remote onboard cameras, onboard microphones and cameras with automatic stabilizing mounts to cover the 1992 America's Cup yacht races. Live broadcasts will begin Mar 28, 1992, with the defenders' fourth-round races.
