Ibutilide

Article Abstract:

The new drug ibutilide fumarate (Corvert) has been approved by the FDA for intravenous use in heart flutter and atrial fibrillation, an irregular pattern of the heart rhythm. One or two intravenous doses may restore sinus rhythm in some heart patients, based solely on the data from three manufacturer's trials. The exact drug mechanism is not known, although ibutilide prolongs action potentials in heart tissue. Ibutilide causes birth defects in rats and causes the death of rat embryos. Patients should avoid taking ibutilide with other antiarrhythmic drugs or antihistamines that do not cause drowsiness, such as terfenadine and astemizole. The evaluation of ibutilide awaits further clinical testing.
