A survey of the most favored sails among Cruising World readers indicate the popularity of coastal gunkholing and daysailing. About 22% of respondents sail at least four months a year and bring about five sails. Around 33% purchased new sails and shelled out $2,000 in 1996.

Ten of the entries in the 1994-95 BOC Challenge had major equipment failures. They included lost masts, crippled rudders and broken booms. The repairs that these competitors jury rigged can also be used by cruising sailors faced with an emergency.

The Shannon Pilot 43 pilothouse sailboat features a pilothouse design that is smoothly blended into the hull. The boat also has a 71-horsepower engine, two 71-gallon fuel tanks and a longish fin to reduce draft.
