Wilderness myths: a Montana researcher disputes some accepted beliefs about the land

Research ecologist David Cole states that environmental damage done by campers only affects a very small portion of the wilderness in popular areas. Cole says it is better to confine campsites to dedicated areas rather than rotating sites.

Kisatchie Hills Wilderness

Article Abstract:

Visitors to the Kisatchie National Forest can enjoy clear streams, mesas and hiking. The terrain is rough, and it can be crowded, but the Dormon Trail is quiet. Wildlife is abundant, and a variety of plants can be seen.

Hikers should eschew guidebooks and adopt the Australian Aborigines' practice of 'Walkabout' or 'Dreamtime,' in which the hiker proceeds in any direction that nature seems to urge. The hiker must go alone.
