'5C' TO GET CEA VIDEO BOARD BACKING

Article Abstract:

The Consumer Electronics Assn is drafting a letter to the FCC opposing encryption of over-the-air DTV broadcasts while expressing non-exclusive support for the Digital Transmission Content Protection (DTCP) system. The non-exclusivity is a nod to Thomson and Zenith, which champion the rival Extended Conditional Access (XCA) scheme, but most US cable boxes re expected to use DTCP. The move to encryption may break the stalemate in negotiations with the film industry, which is planning to license content or digital cable and satellite on the condition that encryption be used. Mitsubishi and Sony are pledging to bring HDTV sets to market containing 5C copy protection. 5C is accepted as adequate by only two of the seven major studios. DTV prices continue to drop, and Mitsubishi plans to cut the price of its 46W HD-ready set to $1,999.
