A 500kA high-voltage vacuum switch
Article Abstract:
The mercury cathode ignitron has been the industry standard switch for high-voltage high-power applications over the past 10 years. However there have been concerns about the use of toxic mercury as the cathode material and this has driven the development of a new type of high voltage switch. EEV has been developing such a switch that use a cylindrical trigger electrode that can also operate as part of the internal shielding structure. Zinc was used as the cathode material due to its low heat of vaporization, suitable mechanical properties and environmental acceptability.
