ACTS of revolution

Article Abstract:

The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite, or ACTS, program of the National Aeronautical and Space Administration, or NASA, was created for technology development that will satisfy the technology requirements for the new millennium of communications satellites. Communications satellites have technology requirements for directly providing affordable services from the location of clients, integrated one-platform services, digital transmission and resource assignment on demand. The ACTS program was the first to employ the Ka-band of 30 gigaHertz to 20 gigaHertz, proving that one onboard-switching-equipped satellite can satisfy the said requirements.

Linking satellites and terrestrial systems

Article Abstract:

A wide range of new satellite communications services, such as highly-mobile applications and personal services for online access and interactive multimedia and remote-region communications, are being prepared by corporations worldwide. The new satellite-based communications services will function as complementary services to conventional terrestrial communications networks. The planned link between terrestrial and satellite communications systems will enable millions of customers to benefit from economical data- and voice-communications services.
