VoD MARKET SEEKS JUMP-START

Article Abstract:

Industry observers say News Corp's possible acquisition of DirecTV could greatly increase interest in video on demand (VoD) within the cable industry because News Corp would move quickly to offer VoD services as a way of gaining market share. The satellite industry is poised to announce agreements with TiVo, Blockbuster and others for VoD programming, but the cable industry has been slower to respond. Scientific-Atlanta is expected to offer a cable set-top box by mid-2001with a built-in Keen Personal Media personal video recorder; Pace Micro Technology us building similar devices for Comcast. The biggest obstacle to VoD has been obtaining licenses from major film studios concerned about copyright protection.
