Barnacle beating - an international issue

Article Abstract:

Tributyltin-based (TBT) coatings are very effective for retarding hull damage caused by weeds and barnacles and they have been in wide use since the 1970s. Unfortunately, TBT and other organotin coatings have also proven to be harmful to benign forms of marine life and this has prompted the introduction of increasingly stringent regulations to curb, and eventually eliminate their use. This is being opposed by many in the shipping industry who contend that a total ban on TBTs is unrealistic.

The main topic of concern at the 1995 Conseil International des Machines a Combustion congress in Interlaken, Switzerland, revolved around the environmental impact of the internal combustion engine. Top industry executives discussed the progress that has been achieved with regard to the development of more environment-friendly engines. However, they also stated that much more work still needs to be done if they are to meet the global trend towards increasingly stringent environmental laws.

Getting it in and getting it out

Article Abstract:

Cargo handling gear are continuously being redesigned in response to the constant pressure for the optimization of the speed of cargo transfer and turnaround times in port. Significant improvements have been made on such equipment as LNG pumps, loading elevator systems and train lifts. Possible improvements on the current design of LNG pumps, and the side loading elevator system and train lift from Sweden-based firm MacGregor are discussed.
