Article Abstract:

Shipbuilders Samsung, BP Shipping, and Lloyd's Register are using full scale measurements to analyze hull fatigue and methods to prolong the life of double-hulled tankers. The companies are analyzing the hull stress by using senrors placed at the end connections in the ballast tanks of BP Shipping's three ships "British Hawk", "British Harrier", and "British Hunter." The use of measurement data will help BP Shipping, Lloyd's Register and Samsung improve the ship structural design and maintenance.
