Design provides all-year flexibility

Article Abstract:

The Pacific reefer ship is a multi-functional vessel built by Scheepswerf Van Diepen for CV Scheepvarrtonderneming. The cargo ship is an all-weather transport that can accommodate large refrigerated cargoes at temperatures above - 30 degrees centigrade. The Pacific has a 398,000-cubic ft. load volume with an overall length of 134 m. and a breadth of 16.3 m. The cargo ship is equipped with a refrigeration system that uses R22 refrigerants that are lubricated with synthetic oil. The refrigeration system can cool down a full load of bananas in 36 hours to 32 degrees centigrade.

Redundancy vs reliability

Article Abstract:

The 18th Motor Ship conference in Hamburg, Germany, attracted over 120 marine industry representatives. The conference's theme was 'Redundancy vs. Reliability' in marine machinery, particularly in ship propulsion systems. One speaker stressed that the costs of building new twin engine, twin propeller ships were too high. He suggested that ship owners should instead try to develop more competent maintenance staffs. Other speakers discussed the concept of redundancy in marine navigation and communications systems.
