Moreover, the improved efficiency and productivity of these new facilities is expected to make Korean companies more competitive. Korean shipyards such as Hyundai, Daewoo, Samsung, Halla, Hanjin and Daedong are expanding their newbuilding facilities to be more competitive with their Japanese counterparts. The expansion in shipbuilding capacity were prompted by Japanese shipyards' larger share of the world shipbuilding market in 1994.
