Driver accident risk in relation to the penalty point system in British Columbia

Article Abstract:

A study of driver accident risk conducted by the Motor Vehicle Authorities of British Columbia using logistic regression analysis revealed that the accidents were caused by high risk drivers involved in one or more at-fault accidents. Analysis of the records of 1,998,347 drivers revealed that postperiod accidents per driver and preperiod number of crashes and convictions were directly proportional to each other. History of accident involvement of the drivers should be a factor that determines the issue of warnings, interviews or license suspension by driver licensing authority.

Motor vehicle injury prevention

Article Abstract:

Many motor vehicle injuries are preventable, however, the number of injuries and fatalities continue to rise considerably. A multidisciplinary attack must be directed to tackle this problem, which must involve federal, state, and private resources. The establishment of a national coordinating body would facilitate federal control efforts and initiate related research and programs. Educating the public of its preventability, implementing legislation and law enforcement, andcontinuing interdisciplinary research are recommended.

Trends in motor vehicle fatalities

Article Abstract:

A simple but stable model that reflects both short-term and long-term trends in motor-vehicle fatalities is developed. This model considers the number of monthly motor-vehicle fatalities as a function of vehicle miles traveled and the number of unemployed people, employed people, people outside the labor force and new car sales. The model revealed short-term upward trends in fatalities in 1984, 1986 and 1993, as well as a continuing long-term downward trend in fatalities.
