Falls among older adults--risk factors and prevention strategies

Article Abstract:

The epidemiology of older adult falls and the interventions that can reduce these injuries are summarized. Fall risk can be reduced by modifying risk factors such as lower-body weakness, problems with gait and balance, use of psychoactive medications, visual impairment and by the treatment of certain chronic disease such as Parkinson's, a history of stroke and arthritis.

The impact of a nationwide effort to reduce airbag-related deaths among children: An examination of fatality trends among younger and older age groups

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to examine the impact of a nationwide response to emerging airbag-related deaths among children. It is concluded that reduction in front-seat deaths among younger and older children is associated with the combination of nationwide public information programs, legislative, and enforcement, which increased after 1999.

The travel patterns of older adults living in the United States as depicted in the 2001 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) are highlighted. This survey is used to examine the difference in travel patterns across age groups.
