Aratere boosts inter-island service

Article Abstract:

Interisland Line of Tranz Rail has commissioned 'Aratere' on Sep 8, 1998. The vessel, manufactured at the HJ Barreras Shipyard in Vigo, Spain, is the replacement for the 24-year old Aratika, a pure rail ferry. Aratere, which is capable of accommodating all types of rail wagons, is superior to Aratika in such aspects as speed, berthing, shunting, transit time and capacity. The vessel is capable of up to six crossings daily, a development that increased Interisland's capacity by 50%.

Equilibrium shattered

Article Abstract:

Significant changes are taking place in the ferry sector as a result of the remodeling of ordinary full-displacement steel-hulled ferries into larger, faster vessels. Superfast Ferries has been particularly influential in this area, disproving the view that it is not economically feasible to travel faster and carry large amounts of freight.
