Four-strokes encroach on low-speed domain

Article Abstract:

Upgraded medium-speed four-stroke engines are used in the propulsion of smaller ships and larger specialist tonnage vessels while large-bore models can be used in bulkers, container ships and tankers. These engines can be modified by using single engines for small cargo vessels to multi-engine or twin-screw installations for more powerful passenger ships. Among the vessels using medium-speed four-stroke engines are the tankers Futura and Natura and the container ship Atlantic Lady.

Investigating CRP efficiency and reliability

Article Abstract:

The new contra-rotating propeller designed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. makes use of a dual-propeller system. Swirling flow energy produced by the forward propeller is recovered by the aft propeller, reducing energy loss and improving fuel efficiency. The propeller is also designed for easy maintenance, reliability, and durability. Mitsubishi began work on the project in 1983.
