French yards cultivate niche markets

Article Abstract:

The French shipbuilding industry's ability to produce a wide range of speciality vessels has allowed it to capture a significant share of the international shipbuilding market. However, the French industry's market share could be jeopardized by the EC's unequal treatment of the shipbuilding industry. The commission imposed a 9% ceiling on shipbuilding subsidies for EC shipyards in 1993 while it adopted higher ceilings for East European shipyards. Consequently, many EC shipyards, particularly French shipyards, stand to lose a large share of the world market to Far Eastern shipbuilders.

Yards regroup and consolidate

Article Abstract:

Finnish shipbuilders have recently laid out plans to limit ships being built and consolidate its systems to provide greater service and efficiency. Kvaener ASA has undergone financial restructuring by reselling debts and forming a smaller and more efficient corporate structure. Other companies like Aker Maritime and Finnyards have merged to form the new Aker Yards and is expected to widen market share and increase revenue. On the other hand, Helsinki and Turku ship yards have opted to limit orders to cruise ships due to continued high demands.

Niche markets maintained

Article Abstract:

Fincantieri - Cantieri Navali Italiani SpA has prospered from its core business of cruise ship building and is also flourishing from other commercial shipbuilding work. Cruise ship construction occupies two of the company's eight yards, while the firm plans to use its remaining six yards to develop niche markets, such as orders from gas carrying shippers. To offset an existing competitive disadvantage in relation to its Far East rivals, Fincantieri has set up alliances with Dalian New Shipyard, China; and Avondale, USA.
