Gearing up for export

Article Abstract:

Spanish marine engine manufacturer Manises Diesel is licensed to produce MAN B and W and New Sulzer Diesel engines for export. The engine firm, which has a production capacity of 331,000 kilowatts per year, has been producing MAN products exclusively since 1995. Other Spanish marine machinery firms such as propeller manufacturer Navalips and ship pump maker Bombas Azcue have also tapped foreign markets as sources of orders. Navalips is scheduled to deliver 10 CLT propellers for a 45,000 dwt container ship for Szczerin yard of Poland.

Gearing up for speed

Article Abstract:

Gearbox manufacturers need to come up with suitable transmissions as engine makers have formulated more powerful engines to keep pace with the trend toward higher speeds and larger vessels in the fast ferry market. Gearbox producers also have to reduce the transmission's weight without sacrificing strength, as high-speed ferry builders seek to reduce the weight of all machinery on board. The growing use of turbines must be taken into account and flexibility must not be compromised as products become more complex.

Turning in different directions

Article Abstract:

Twin propeller systems consume 12% more fuel and generate 6-12% more hydrodynamic resistance than single propeller systems. However, contra-rotating twin systems are 10-15% more fuel efficient and produce less vibration than single propellers. One major disadvantage with contra-rotating twin propellers is that they are more likely to foul than single propellers. Moreover, they have a greater tendency to foul each other, thereby disabling an entire ship.
