Entering a new era

Article Abstract:

One of the biggest issues facing the refrigerated carrier business today concerns the phaseout of ozone-depleting refrigerants and the many alternative chemicals available today. Anticipating the end of R12 production, many carriers are retrofitting containers and ships to handle the approved R134a. However, R134a is still a greenhouse gas and it may be subject to a similar ban in the future. There are other alternative refrigerants but many are understandably confused because of their large number.

Funding cannot come soon enough

Article Abstract:

The Russian maritime industry is in dire need of funds as it struggles to overcome the economic and political problems caused by the breakup of the former Soviet Union. Such problems have complicated the search for creditors willing to secure financing. Nevertheless, companies believe that the problems can be hurdled and that prospects are good. The strong gains made by companies such as North-Western Shipping Co. and Baltic Shipping Co. have further strengthened their optimism.

A South African alliance

Article Abstract:

Griffin Shipping Holdings Ltd. has taken advantage of South Africa's lax shipping regulations by establishing a new office in Johannesburg and acquiring three secondhand bulk carriers for servicing South African exporters. Other companies have already followed suit by entering into alliances with major South African firms engaged in exports. These include Unicorn Lines and Safmarine and Rennies Holding Ltd.
