Growth in size of LNG tankers

Article Abstract:

The liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers have undergone several changes in terms of their capacity since 1950s. Almost in every decade the demand for larger carriers seemed to grow. In the current day, demand for LNG carriers is of capacity 250,000meter cube. Therefore naval architects developing these design holds a challenging task as it involves understanding its key parts, the membrane tank type and containment systems.

The Jan 1993 grounding of the oil tanker Braer off the Shetland Islands coast has awakened governments to the need of maintaining high standards for the world's tanker fleet. However, a uniform standard for the tankers will be difficult since there is no certainty that all the governments will exert the same effort in enforcing the standard.
