Plate measurements get priority attention

Shipowners are required to submit steel thickness measurements six months before their ships undergo special surveys. In many cases, the requirement includes the thickness measurement of deck plating, shell plating and internal structure, with older ships being required to undergo more stringent measurements.

Issues concerning the events following the recommendation by a surveyor that a ship's class be modified or removed are discussed. Particular attention is given to legal aspects of class removing procedures and elements of quality control which put ships at risk of class removal.
