Home and leisure injury prevention - part 2: an infrastucture for injury control

Article Abstract:

Injury is America's leading cause of death and disability among children and young adults, robbing many years of their productive life; and yet, federal funding this area of research is but a small fraction of the amount allotted for health research. It was recommended that the government establish an adequately funded national lead agency for injury control; that state legislatures should implement surveillance and research programs directed to injury prevention; and that a multidisciplinary approach intraining of injury control professionals be taken.

Occupational injury prevention

Article Abstract:

Many American workers die or are hospitalized because of job-related injuries causing not only family or personal difficulties but a great loss to the country's economic potential as well. What is even more tragic is that most of these injuries are avoidable; had it not been for the lack of commitment to injury prevention. Efforts should be taken to the development of a multidisciplinary, multiorganizational approach which includescoordinated and comprehensive action steps in education, research, surveillance and prevention.

Home and leisure injury prevention - part 1: selected injuries

Article Abstract:

Many lives had been lost or irreversibly shattered by accidental injuries other than those that are motor- vehicle related, such as: falls, drownings, poisonings, fire- or burn-related injuries, and firearm injuries. The federal, state, and local governments together with the private sector should address this problem through coordinated efforts in research, implementation of preventive programs, and enforcement of present laws and regulations.
