Is there an SRB in your tank?

Article Abstract:

One of the major problems facing the shipping industry is the proliferation of miroorganisms in the ballast tanks of ships. Sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) are particularly harmful since they produce corrosive sulphide which causes severe pitting. The presence of black slimes and sludges and the smell of hydrogen sulphide are some of the indications of SRB attack. This could be countered by applying an effective biocide after thoroughly cleaning and removing rust from the bottom plates. Alternative methods such as microfiltration, ultraviolet, ultrasonic and thermal treatment are currently being studied.

Studies seek solutions to ballast water bugs

Article Abstract:

Many countries such as Australia, Israel, the US and the UK are developing strategies to address the growing concern over unwanted aquatic microorganisms in their waters which are transported when vessels exchange ballast water. Australia has established the Australian Ballast Water Management Advisory Council to supervise marine research and the development of effective strategies. The UK, through its Marine Safety Agency, is looking into the possibility of copper silver ionization systems and ultraviolet treatment to eliminate unwanted microorganisms in ballast water tanks.

Italian manufacturers look to their own

Article Abstract:

A number of Italian ship equipment manufacturers are benefitting from the large number of cruise ship newbuildings in the country's shipyards. For example, B and B Italia S.p.A.'s tough, fireproof high security panels are being fitted on two vessels being built at Fincantieri. Genoa-based architectonic design firm Studio de Jorio has been engaged to work on projects with three different yards.
