Mistral breezes onto European cruise scene

Article Abstract:

French shipyard Saint-Nazaire Chantiers de l'Atlantique has delivered the newly-built, 47,900-g flagship, Mistral, to Piraeus, Greece-based Festival Cruises ahead of schedule. Mistral is powered by a diesel electric propulsion system that integrates four Wartsila 12C38V diesel engines. Four 7,650KW, 3-phase 60Hz alternators provide the power generation on board. In addition, Mistral is outfitted with two finned rudders and a set of retractable stabilisers. Festival Cruises will begin Mistral's advertised cruising season from the port of Genoa on July 1999.

Gas turbines blow in

Article Abstract:

The surprise decision of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd to specify combined cycle turbines for some of its ships was shaped by several factors. One was the knowledge that the steam turbines would have minimal gas emissions. Another was the fact that reduced machinery space requirements permitted the building of 50 more cabins. Other factors that came into play were considerations related to turbine efficiency, fuel type, fuel consumption, inlet air volumes, noise and maintenance costs.
