Mixed fortunes for Norway's yards

Article Abstract:

Norway's major shipyards are enjoying a continuous flow of contracts, but smaller repairers are suffering from a slack. The lack of new orders among smaller yards is traced to the decline of the small family business and keen competition from abroad, particularly from Spain. The quietly optimistic mood is thus limited to those yards which have the resources to invest in technological advances which is increasingly required by the growing specialized tonnage market. Developments at Norwegian shipbuilders including Westamarin AS, Fosen Mek Verksteder AS, Ulstein and Kvaerner are discussed.

Australian fast ferry builders under threat

Article Abstract:

Australia's fast ferry builders may cease to dominate in the global shipping industry owing to the government's decision to eliminate subsidies before other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries. While the move is aimed at reducing the country's current deficit by 1998, it is expected to result in loss of orders at Australian shipyards. Among the first to be affected by the decision was Incat Australia, which may not be getting orders from international fast ferry operator Holyman. Holyman has said that it will be compelled to turn to cheaper yards abroad.
