Taiwanese rely on flexible output

Article Abstract:

Various Taiwanese shipyards are planning to increase their productivity despite declining orders from the world market. State-owned China Shipbuilding Corp plans to increase its productivity by 30% through 1998 by upgrading its automated design and manufacturing systems. The company also plans to build different vessel types according to the demands of the market. Ching Fu Shipbuilding Co Ltd, Fung Kuo Shipbuilding Co Ltd, Lien Ho Shipbuilding Co Ltd and Taiwan Machinery Manufacturing Corp also plan to increase their productivity and boost Taiwan's shipbuilding business.

China emerges

Article Abstract:

China is determined to outperform Germany and Poland to become the third largest shipbuilder in the world next only to Japan and South Korea. Figures suggest that this goal may be achieved. For the first 11 months of 1995, the China State Shipbuilding Co. alone received orders for over 2.4 million dwt of newbuildings valued at $1.5 billion. The strengths of the Chinese shipbuilding industry were highlighted during the recently held trade show Marintec China 95.

Australian fast ferry output is export led

Article Abstract:

The Australian shipbuilding industry is growing fast with internal competition heating up. It is now supported by the government and shipbuilders expect to earn an equivalent of US$769 million from vessel exports by the 21st century. Fast ferries are the most popular ships, accounting for 85% of the industry. Australian technology, however, still needs to advance and keep up with those of other countries.
