More routes, more ships

Article Abstract:

Star Cruises is one of the shipping companies in Malaysia that is progressive and is taking advantage of the fast growing shipping industry. The first vessel was launched in 1993 and in a span of four years, the company was able to acquire five vessels in the fleet namely, MegaStar Aries, MegaStar Taurus, Star Pisces, SuperStar Gemini and Star Aquarius. In 1997, the company is looking forward into the fly-cruise market by introducing Capricorn. The company has a general occupancy rate of 80/90% space on its Star class vessels.

Operating philosophy needs addressing

Article Abstract:

The International Maritime Organization's (IMO) panel of experts on roro passenger ferry safety has issued a report calling for a change in passenger ships' operating philosophy to ensure maritime safety. In its report, the IMO panel stressed that technical standards and regulations are not sufficient for promoting the safety of passenger ships. It asked governments to work for the strengthening of a safety culture in the passenger ships under their jurisdiction.

Roro survival needs further research

Article Abstract:

The 1994 Estonia tragedy again called the attention of the shipbuilding industry to the shortcomings of current roll-on-roll-off (roro) vessel design. Several entities are conducting research into the stability of roro vessels and their ability to survive damage. Using models and mathematical analysis, researchers have been able to pinpoint several flaws in roro vessel design. A brief overview of these findings is presented.
