Owners await outcome

Article Abstract:

South Korea's financial crisis and the dramatic decline of the value of the won against the US dollar have left the nation's shipping industry with tow major issues. These are a massive increase in the cost of borrowing and an increased imbalance between export and import volumes. Any foreign currency debt incurred by owners for capital investments in new ships could require crippling debt payments. Shipowners are also having considerably difficulty getting cargoes for eastbound voyages because of an import slump. It appears that all they can do is weather the financial trouble and await its outcome.
