Propellers: the basics

Article Abstract:

The efficiency of the propeller is influenced by a variety of factors including relative velocity, blade geometry, and design. The propeller's efficiency is increased by lessening the propeller's speed and increasing its diameter. Hull forms, wake factors, noise and vibration affects the propeller's design. Cavitation, due to increased speed and increased angle of attach, can be prevented by tip unloading, that is, decreasing the pitch of the blade at the extreme radius.
